Video Poker for your iPhone

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Do you have an iPhone?  They seem to be everywhere these days and people are building applications for them as fast as they can churn them out.  And these days you can even play video poker on your iphone.  So I thought I’d take a look at the options.

There are two different reasons to play poker on the iPhone and they require different approaches. First, you might want to play video poker simply to practice your strategy. If this is your purpose, you’ll want to check out the various applications that you can download and play on without being connected to a casino, depositing or using real money.  This is a great way to get in some video poker practice on if you plan to visit a casino in the future or if you just want a low risk way to spend some time.  There are plenty of video poker applications out there offering various games. Most of these will run you a couple of bucks for the game.

The second reason to play video poker on the iPhone is to play at a real casino for money. There are a handful of online casinos out there that offer the option to play on your phone.  Now if you’re playing for real money, the casinos are glad to provide you with free access to their games.  Many will even provide free practice games in hopes that you may eventually make a deposit and play with real money.  Now my advice for online players is to look for a casino that offers regular web play (from your laptop or desktop) as well as play on your iPhone.  This will provide you with more options when you want to play at home and perhaps let the iPhone be a phone.

Video Poker and gambling superstitions

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Can luck affect your play at the casino? The mathematicians say no but the gamblers aren’t always sure about this.  I still remember going to Atlantic City with a slots player who brought along holy water from her Catholic church.  I sure hope they make those machines water resistant because I could just imagine her dousing a machine with holy water, causing a short and plunging the whole casino into darkness.  Fortunately that didn’t happen (maybe casinos really are prepared) but she also didn’t win that night. So, holy water — probably not effective on slot machines.  But in honor of Halloween, I’ve decided to take a look at some gambling superstitions.

Blow or spit the cards.  Okay, this one is a little harder when we’re talking about video poker where the cards are on a screen.  I’m going to say that if holy water doesn’t have an effect, spit probably won’t do anything more than gross out the other players.

Wear something that’s dirty because dirt helps keep evil at bay.  Hmm, I’m thinking if it’s dirty enough it could keep your fellow players at bay.  Well, at least you’d have a nice row of video poker machines all to yourself.

Don’t sing or whistle during a poker game. Yeah, I’ll go along with this one. I don’t know if it will change your luck with the cards but it will probably making the others in the casino happy.  That’s if you haven’t scared them all off by spitting on things and wearing stinky clothes.

Don’t sit cross-legged because that will cross out your luck.  You know, I don’t think we need to worry much about this one. I don’t know that many video poker players who can sit cross legged.

There are more of these fun superstitions out there.  I’m going to track some more down for some superstitious October fun.  And if anyone wins with a royal flush after blessing the game with holy water, let me know.

Video Poker and the Garbage Hand

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Now and then I’m reminded of my first attempts at Video Poker and some of the things that frustrated me.  Actually, my first encounter with video poker was rather free of frustration, but also free of stragety.  I was on a gambling boat with friends who sat me in front of a Jacks or Better game and just told me to play 5 coins and try to hold the highest hand.  Okee-dokee.  I actually walked off that boat with $2 more than I started with and one of the worse cases of sea sickness I’ve ever had. But I didn’t stress about the cards. I was too sick to stress about the cards. I just held anything that looked vaguely promising and hit deal while wondering if the boat was ever going to stop moving.

But despite this somewhat rocky introduction to the game, I discovered that I enjoyed playing video poker. (I particularly enjoy playing online while sitting in a comfy chair in a completely stationary environment.)  But people then informed me that if I learned a good video poker strategy, I would do better and win money. But I already won money, I said. But still, this strategy thing sounded good.

So, I looked up my first strategy cards and found a practice game of Jacks or Better. And the frustration began.  It seemed like every hand I was dealt related to absolutely nothing on the card. I kept looking at my hand, then the card, then back to my hand.  Certainly I had something that I could keep and make into a better hand?

I’d just run into what is known as a garbage hand in video poker. Actually, I was running into a number of them in a row. These are the hands where you best bet is to dump the whole hand and draw five new cards.  For a new player, this can be frustrating.  It’s natural to feel like you have a better chance of winning of you have something to hold onto.  But with a garbage hand, you actually have a better chance of drawing something useful by throwing away all the cards and getting five new cards. Just don’t let it frustrate you.  Throw those garbage hands away.

Video Poker 2 ways Royal

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

I found this little game over at PKR Casino.  PKR is known for its PKR poker room which has won awards for technological advancement. The poker room really is amazing with customizable avatars and 3D environments.  I find myself wishing that their casino came with customizable environments so I could walk around the casino and play in different locations. But back to 2 Ways Royal.

I’ve seen the game elsewhere. It offers two potential ways to win with a royal flush. The Hi Royal flush which is the tradition 10, J, Q, K, A and a Lo Royal Flush  which lacks any royal cards since it is a run of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.  Though as usual, the sites that offer this games seem to lack any explanation on what exactly constitutes a lo royal flush, so there is some debate that it might be A, 2, 3, 4, 5.  The only way to find out seems to be to win with one.  Of course, if you don’t know exactly, you could make the wrong choice on cards to hold.  Though so far I haven’t really been faced with that delimna though I have hit A, 2, 3, 4, 6 - so close, but not a winner.

Now here’s the odd thing I’ve discovered playing this game on PKR.  The casino is known for its state of the art 3D poker room so I expected to find a spiffy “better than average” video poker look. So I was surprised with the game played stiff and clucky with a sort of mechanical feel, until I found myself thinking “this is as bad as one of those machines on the defunct gambling boat.”  Real world video poker machines just aren’t all that fancy, and PKR has actually managed to recreate that look and feel, down to the coin slot. If you’re actually planning to visit a casino and haven’t seen what a real world video poker machine acts like, give PKR Casino a peek.

Aladdin’s Gold Video Poker Promotion

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Yawn. Aladdin’s Gold is a great casino but after the first hundred times or so, I get bored waiting for all the Flash animation to load.  A little Flash splash is all well and good and can add a bit of visual interest.  But look, after your first page has loaded and said “hey, here I am,” I don’t want to sit through the Saturday morning cartoons to get to some basic information.  Like what the current promotions are.  Sigh, and even then they’re so badly presented visually that I can really only guess at which code goes to which game.  Space between paragraphs and between offers would help, guys.   So, let’s see if I can figure this out

These coupons (codes) are valid through Sunday, September 19th and you can check the casino lobby for info on the promotions available to you. Which is probably a good thing to do since reading the promotions promo page is a bit of a jumbled mess.  The coupon codes are TEACAKE, FISHNCHIPS and ROASTBEEF.  Now, if I’m judging the placement right, ROASTBEEF is the coupon code for video poker and you must wager the bonus at least 50 times before cashing out.  Umm, what bonus. Wait a minute. Gotta change channels and watch the cartoon. Ah, that’s a 45% match bonus up to $1000.  It’s good for Blackjack and Video Poker games this weekend.

Aladdins Gold offers a great selection of video poker games including 7 Stud, which I don’t see at most sites.  So there is a reason to play here. They are also a trustworthy site. And after you download the casino, you don’t have to worry as much about the Flash cartoons.

Video Poker Low Pair or High Card

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

I still remember way back when I started playing video poker. One thing that always bugged me was — if I have been dealt a hand with a low pair (say a couple of 3s) and a single high card (say a Q) , which should I hold.  For some reason, I seemed to keep stumbling over contradictory advice. Everytime I had it figured out, someone would give me different advice.  And the problem was that holding the high card seemed logical.  After all, if I’m holding one queen, there are three queens left in the deck and I just need one more to win.  If I’m holding a pair of threes, there are only 2 threes left in the deck and I need one to win.  Yes, there’s the off chance of drawing another pair, but by that standard, there’s probably a better off chance of hitting second pair if I just hold the queen. After all, if I hold a pair, I’m only drawing three new cards. If I hold the queen, I get four new cards.  Now, see where I was confused?

But I that was before I considered the possibility of hitting four of a kind.  Well, actually that possibility was made astoundingly clear in a game where I held the high card and would have drawn four of a kind if I hadn’t.  I’ve now developed a video poker strategy called “moves that won’t make me jump off the roof.”  (For those concerned. I live in single story house and would probably only sprain an ankle.)  But the “jump off the roof” strategy goes like this — which would you rather miss drawing?  A high pair, which in jacks or better pays 1 for 1 or even money. Three of a kind which pays three to one and brings in a little money. Or a potential four of a kind which pays 125 to one and can make your day.

If I discard the queen and miss getting a high pair, I’ve lost my original bet but not really lost out on a great hand.  It’s not a loss that’s going to make me jump of the roof.  But if I discard the pair and miss four of a kind, well, someone get out the ladder.  I’ve got some climbing to do.

Video Poker tips Don’t hold a kicker

Monday, August 30th, 2010

The idea of a kicker in poker comes from games like Texas hold ‘em and shouldn’t be relied on when playing video poker.  What to learn more?  Okay, I’ll explain.

Now in when you play poker at a table (or virtual online table) the idea is to beat the other guys’ hands.  Now sometimes you have a two players with basically the same hand.  Let’s say both have a pair of eights.  Then the highest remaining unpaired card is the “kicker” and decided who wins. So if one player has a pair of eights and a jack, he has a jack kicker.  But if the other has an ace, then he has an ace kicker.   Which is why in poker holding a high card in a hand can be a strategic move.

So, how does this apply to video poker?  It doesn’t. Not at all.  Which is sometimes a hard habit to break if you’ve played table poker or even if you’ve read lots of table poker strategy.   So, let’s look at pairs in video poker.  You have a pair of eights. And an Ace. We’ll say we’re playing Jacks or Better because that provides a clean strategy to work against. (Acey Deucy would have a different strategy when it comes to aces.)  But back to Jacks or Better.  You want to hold the pair of eights and hope you draw another eight. Or even both eights for four of a kind. (I’ll talk about that a bit in the next post.) But the instinct sometimes is to hold onto that Ace just in case you need that high card.  Don’t.  Let it go.  You don’t need it.  A pair of eights and a ace is a losing hand so holding the ace doesn’t help. And holding it gives you one less card that could be that third or fourth eight.   There is no opponent to beat with a high card kicker. There is just the machine.  Let the kicker go. Come on, you can do it.

Legal Video Poker moves slowly in Illinois

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Over a year ago the great state of Illinois passed legislation that would allow video poker and slot games in local bars.  The state even selected a company, Scientific Games of New York, to design a computer system to keep track of all the slot and video poker games that were going to be installed around the state.  This was all of course to allow the state to collect revenue from the games. Which isn’t an evil thing. Gambling is often seen as an elective or optional tax because no one forces gamblers to play the games and risk their money.  But most states find that it’s easier to collect this elective taxation if they actually put the machines in place.

Which Illinois hasn’t gotten around to yet. So don’t rush to Illinois to play video poker.  The state will need to pay Scientific Games an estimated $62 million to set up the tracking system. They also need to finalize the application that bar owners will fill out to install the games. Oh and they have to agree on the administrative rules around the legislation.  At this point, it seems that they will allow only up to five machines per bar to avoid creating mini casinos.

The video gambling machines going into bars have been estimated to bring in about $100 million a year in revenue.  If the state can just get them into the bars.  This is potential revenue that is currently finding its way to Wisconsin casinos, where the Illinois residents drive to play.  Of course, the usual arguments are being made that this is the worst way to make money because people who can least afford to play are the heaviest players. But I’m not sure that’s always true. And apparently the people are currently just driving to Wisconsin.  At least if the gambling was local, the state would have funds to offer services to those most in need.

Own a casino Play video poker

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Okay, it’s not a real casino.  And you won’t make real money. But this is an interesting approach to marketing and it involves Video Poker, so it can’t be all bad.

The Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas was looking for a way to introduce casino gambling to a market that might not be familiar with the experience.  After all, people can find it intimidating to walk into a noisy casino for the first time. And some people really have never experienced gambling in any form. Those people aren’t likely to schedule a vacation to Vegas and visit the Golden Nugget. So, how to tackle that problem?

Well, one of the biggest forms of interactive marketing out there right now is Facebook. Yes, I know social networking, etc.  It’s a marketing tool that people visit voluntarily.  There are already video poker games and slot games and even full blown poker games on Facebook, so the Golden Nugget had to come up with a different approach.  So they went the way of Farmville and decided to let people build and run their own virtual casino. The Golden Nugget supplies the game for free. All you need to play is a Facebook account.

When you start the game, you’ll get a tiny casino floor and enough money to purchase some slot machines and table games.  You’ll collect profits from the games depending on the type of game. This will advance you up the levels where you can buy more games and even expand your casino. You also get to decorate the casino, which can be fun. But Golden Nugget didn’t stop at letting you build the casino.  You can visit a friend’s casino (or Ace’s Casino, he’s always there) and actually play the games on the machine.  Not every game has a playable mini-game, but you’ll find slots and roulette and yes Video Poker!   The Video Poker game is Jacks or Better or at least that’s all I’ve found. But it does play like a real game.  This strikes me as a great way to introduce a friend or spouse to video poker before suggesting that vacation in Vegas.

Playing the Facebook game is free.  But like most Facebook games, there is an option to get more coins by taking advantage of offers through the site.  I always suggest skipping these and just playing the game.  So far there isn’t an option to get more chips if you run out, other than having friends send them to you.  But each day you will receive some chips if you visit a friend’s casino.  But the game is still in a Beta stage so changes are being made regularly.

Slots Jungle offers Online Video Poker

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

I’ve found the wildest place in the jungle to play video poker - Slots Jungle.  This is a new online casino that’s opened with a jungle theme — lots of dark green, leafy green and a jungle bird as a mascot.  The casino offers one of my favorite things - an instant play option so I can play on computers without downloading software.  It also has a free play option for those who want to practice their games.

As for video poker, the site offers a full range of video poker games and multi hand games for any video poker player.  All my favorites are there from Jacks or Better to Double Bonus poker.  The look is clean and the cards easy to read.  The site does offer the common option to place a bet after winning a video poker hand on the chance of doubling the win.  I don’t recommend that since it depends entirely on guessing and not on strategy.  (Video Poker players are not always young and I’ve come across a few sites that can make you cross-eyed.)

But better yet, the site has a $5000 Wild Kingdom Video Poker Bonus for new players.  This is a big plus on a site since many require you to play slots to play through on the standard welcome bonus.  At Slots Jungle there is a $10,000 King of the Jungle Welcome Bonus if you’re a slots player.  But for Video Poker players, just use the code JUNGLEVP to claim the video poker bonus of 100% back on your first 10 deposits up to $500 each.   You’ll have to wager through the amount 25 times before cashing out, so don’t claim the bonus money unless you expect to spend some quality time on the site.

Slots Jungle is owned and operated by Regalbar Limited and certified by TST, Technical Systems Testing.  The site runs on RTG Realtime Gaming software and is accepting players from the United States.
