An Opportunity Too Good to Pass Up - Part II of IIThis is a continuation of a story begun last week that originally ran in April 2000 Casino Player. As we pick up the story, players playing a $25 coin-dropping machine have just received a fill of $100 coins rather than $25 coins. They are trying to extract these coins without leaving any trace that there was a mistake made by the casino. So we cash in the 44 $25 coins (for $1100) and I feed the bills into the machine. The machine will keep taking bills until it holds $1000. Even three of a kind now will spill 15 coins. But I got nothing. Fed another bill. Nothing. I ended up putting the rest of our $10,000 into the machine and still only had the one coin out. "I'll go use our line of credit to get $5,000," I told Henry. "You stay here." "But Sam, you promised that we wouldn't go over $10,000 for the trip." "Yes I know, but there are 49 $100 coins in that machine just waiting to be plucked out. Since the machine registers each one as $25, we'll make a profit of $3675. That's worth going for! Instead of returning the normal $1,125, our next full house will return $4,500. That gives us a HUGE advantage." So I went to the cage and collected $5,000. I came back and the machine continued to swallow bills ravenously. I kept the credits as close to 40 as the machine would take, and then played a hand. By the time we went through the additional $5,000 only 26 of the $100 coins had come through. There were still 24 in there so I went back to the cage for another $5,000. Henry, meanwhile, was not having a good time. When a $100 coin would spill into the tray, Henry would take it and place it into the purple tray sitting in his lap --- under a magazine. He was sure the eye in the sky was onto our every move. He was envisioning the police showing up at any moment and dragging us both off in handcuffs. And, of course, the amount of the losses themselves was making him quite uncomfortable. "This is no fair," Henry exclaimed. "You're losing my money and I don't even have a vote in it! You're already down $15,000 and you are only getting $2,600 back. And now you are going to play another $5,000 to get another $2,400 in coins. This doesn't seem to be a smart move. Am I missing something? And by the way, did I mention that our $10,000 limit was passed quite a while ago?" I kept playing. By the time 40 coins had come out, I changed strategy a little. I figured I should start feeding the machine with $25 coins. Since sometimes a few coins stick in the bottom instead of falling out, I didn't want there to just be $100 coins in there when they opened up the machine again. We figured the $100 coins would be the first ones out. So I bought a $1,000 black tray of coins. And fed them in. And lost. And bought another $1,000 tray. Eventually we got all 50 $100 coins out of the machine. So now we had $5,000 in $100 tokens and we had to figure out how to get rid of them. We understood the casinos fill out reports and send them to the government whenever you cash in for $3,000 or more, so I cashed out for $2,500 and Henry cashed out for the other $2,500. Our net score on the night was -$13,750 and Henry demanded that I cough up half of the extra $3,750. We ended up losing more than our limit because of this "too good to pass up" opportunity. I suppose you could say we got what we deserved, but it seemed like such a godsend at the time. How were we to know the machine would go a major dry spell just as the opportunity presented itself? Anyway. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Go ahead and tell everybody about it if you like. Bob Dancer is America's best-known video poker writer and teacher.
